media are material modes of engagement - processes

media as sensory prosthetics filtering, mapping, translating, sieving, directing attention

media as therefore embedded in instrumentality

media as mediators in the construction of knowledge

need to open up the black boxes that are at the heart of conventional understanding of media

as chains of translation

photo as photowork rather than a black box of a camera

archaeological practice at best hangs on to things, retaining the field and the object
